What’s Involved in Becoming a Member
Probationary Membership Overview
Join the Livingston First Aid Squad as a probationary member and begin your journey in emergency medical services.
Eligibility: Must be 18+, a U.S. citizen, and either live or work in Livingston, NJ. Requires a valid NJ driver's license and completion of training requirements set by the NJ State First Aid Council.
Your Role: As a probationary member, you'll respond to emergency calls, learn equipment locations and procedures, and work alongside experienced volunteers. You'll participate in maintaining our facility and ambulances while building hands-on experience.
Time Commitment: Attend at least 2/3 of business meetings and training drills, ride your assigned shifts, and take additional calls whenever possible to maximize your learning.
Professional Standards: Maintain a neat appearance on calls and represent the squad professionally at all times. We provide LFAS T-shirts and logo hats for identification.

LFAS Observer Program
Start Your EMS Journey at Age 17
WHAT IS IT?
The LFAS Observer Pilot Program gives you real-world emergency medical experience before committing to full EMT training. Ride along on calls, learn from experienced volunteers, and discover if EMS is right for you.
WHO CAN JOIN?
Age 17 or older
Committed to serving your community
No prior experience needed
WHAT YOU'LL DO
✓ Observe emergency calls (7 PM - 7 AM shifts) ✓ Carry equipment and assist crew members ✓ Perform CPR when needed ✓ Learn hands-on emergency medical skills ✓ Work alongside experienced EMTs
Note: No direct patient care except CPR
PROGRAM TIMELINE
2-3 Months Maximum
Start as an Observer
Must enroll in EMT course within 3 months
Complete requirements and get certified
Join as a full LFAS member
REQUIREMENTS
Observer application
Background check
Physical exam with drug test
Lift test
CPR Professional Rescuer certification
WHAT IT COSTS
$200 donation (fully reimbursed after completing probation) ~$200 additional for physical exam, CPR certification, and uniform
What LFAS Provides:
Insurance coverage
Radio equipment (returned if you leave)
LFAS uniform (returned if you leave)
EMT TRAINING FUND
State law allows us to cover your EMT course if you commit to 3 years of volunteer service.
This means:
Free EMT training (typically $1,000+ value)
Professional certification
Ongoing education and support
Rewarding community service
Can't commit 3 years? You can still join the Observer Program but will pay for your own EMT course.
